Sesen Negash

I am a licensed marriage and family therapist in California and an approved clinical fellow with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). I am also an approved clinical supervisor with AAMFT.  In addition, I am a tenured associate professor and director of the Marriage and Family Therapy program at San Diego State University (SDSU). I am also the co-director of the Center for Achieving Black Wellness and Anti-Racist Education. I earned my Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Florida State University and M.S. in Child Development and Family Studies (with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy) from Purdue University.

I value my clinical work and am grateful for the opportunities I have to support my community. At the same time, balancing the intersections of all my salient personal and professional identities under the socio-political conditions in this country while also attending to the mental health needs of clients can be complex, fatiguing, and isolating.  I need a professional community to maintain a healthy relationship with my role as mental wellness provider. Out of this need came the idea for CC-BMW. As a member of the CC-BMW team, I look forward to learning from and connecting with other Black mental wellness providers in San Diego.
